Do you think your website changes are out of your control? Or perhaps you want to build a better website but don’t know where to begin? A lot of website owners think that there has to be a total renovation – a brand new site – in order for them to have a ‘better website’. This may be true in some cases but sometimes, a couple of tweaks can make a whole lot of difference between bland and beautiful. There are a lot of things you can do. In this article, we’ll take you beyond just spell-checking your site for errors. Here are some ideas you can put into action right now:

Introduction

Organize Your Menu

Do you have numerous items under a single heading on your navigation bar? If so, you might want to tidy up. A cleaner navigation makes things easier to find. And because it’s easier to find, it creates a better experience for your site visitors. Furthermore, they’ll be less likely to hit the Back button because they won’t be confused and frustrated trying to search for what they need.

Initiate a Call to Action on Each Page

Every web page should make your visitor act on something. For example, you can get them to purchase your product, view your credentials or watch a demo video. Whatever it is, make it known to your readers. Remember, they don’t want to think when they’re browsing your site. Whether it’s a button or a hyperlink, leave something on every page that’ll lead them to the action you want them to take.

Get Social with Your Clients

Haven’t joined the social media bandwagon yet? These days, it seems like the whole world is on social media in some way. After all, we’re social people who like to interact with friends, family, and even strangers. We even listen to their recommendations. As a website owner who want to build an online presence, you’ll want to hop in on this community-building. Get yourself a Facebook page or Twitter account and focus on mastering one of them. Afterwards, move to the next network.

Add an ‘About Us’ Page

Who are you? Do you work with a team? What’s your company background? When an entrepreneur – or client – selects a company to do business with, they often like to know who they’ll be working with. Make sure to add photos of your team, along with real biographies. Sure, professional experience is a big plus, but don’t forget to list your hobbies, family life, and things you like to do for fun. Bottom line: show them you’re a real human being.

Use Big, Bold Images

Eye-catching images seem to be a pretty big web design trend these days, but it’s mainly because images speak louder than words. Capture your visitors’ attention with beautiful imagery. Take pictures of your team, shots of the local area and/or recent projects you’ve worked on.

Eliminate Distractions (Music, Splash Pages, etc.)

Do you have music playing on your site, or a splash page that blocks people from getting to what they really need? Remove it all. Why? Because it’s annoying for many visitors, and it distracts them from doing what you really want them to do!

What’s Your Site’s Main Goal?

What’s the purpose of your site? What do you want your website to do? After answering these questions, make sure your website accomplishes the goal: add or delete pages, restructure your site, make a new landing page, etc. Make your site’s goal a top priority and let your team know what the goal is so they can help out, too.

Make Your Site Responsive

Mobile is huge right now, and customers are likely to access your site from mobile browsing. It’s tough to navigate a website that’s not optimized for small screens. Well, guess what? Responsive web design is becoming a popular trend as well! Now, there are a lot of inexpensive (and free) tools and resources to help you create a mobile-friendly website from your current site. Explore this option or get a web designer to make your site responsive.

Start From Scratch

While this isn’t highly recommended as it may take a lot of time, money and resources, it may be worth it. If you have an old website, starting over with brand new technology would be a wise choice, rather than trying to patch what you already have. Start with a pencil sketch of what you want to build, and assemble the best team to make it happen.

Hire a Professional

If you’ve kept your web project in-house, it may be worth looking at bringing in the big shots. Professional web designers will not only move the project forward, they’ll also bring their own experience and expertise to the table!

There are a whole lot of tips to building a better website, but this should be a good start for you. Pick one or more from this list and start making the necessary changes to your site.

Best of luck taking your website to the next level!
